Sonakshi debut in "Dabangg"

Salman Khan will play a corrupt and fearless cop from Uttar Pradesh in the upcoming film Dabangg, which will mark Shatrughan Sinha's daughter Sonakshi's debut in Bollywood.

The film, which will have Salman mouthing a lot of UP slang, will also mark the debut of his brother, Arbaaz Khan, as a producer. Arbaaz also acts in the film to be helmed by Anurag Kashyap's brother, Abhinav Kashyap.

Dabangg, which means bold, will feature Salman in a never before seen role and makeover, well outside the mould of the rich and stylish Prem.

Arbaaz says, “Salman Khan's role is terrific. Salman's fans have never seen him like this before. Besides, I haven't cast Salman because he is my brother, but he fits the character perfectly. When Abhinav offered me a role in the film, I immediately wanted to produce it. For long, I had been toying with the idea of turning producer. This was just the excuse I needed to take the plunge.”

Talking about casting debutant Sonakshi, Arbaaz says, “There's no point in casting a heroine who has already been seen four times with Salman. I wanted to cast a stunning new girl and Sonakshi fits the bill. She has lost a lot of weight. She still needs to lose a little more.”

Sonakshi, who turned 22 this month, has studied fashion design at SNDT college, Mumbai and was all set to pursue a career in fashion designing. However, Salman discerned a lot of histrionic potential in her when she walked the ramp at a fashion show that he attended. He convinced Sonakshi and her parents – Shatrughan and Poonam – to give acting a shot but told her she would need to shed 10 kg of weight. Sonakshi had already shed 30 kg before her ramp debut.

So far, Sohail Khan has been the producer in the 'Khan'dan, with Salman featuring in most of his film, typically co-starring with a sibling. Upcoming Sohail Khan films include Wanted Dead Or Alive featuring Salman with Arbaaz; and Main Aur Mrs Khanna featuring Salman with Sohail.

Salman Khan will be next seen in the eagerly awaited London Dreams, directed by Vipul Amrutlal Shah with co-stars Ajay Devgan, Urmila Matondkar, Asin, Lara Dutta and Ranvijay Singh.

Sonakshi stands up for every star kid..

Sonakshi Sinha is all set to make her mark in the industry with a film opposite Salman Khan.

Reports claim that you’ve walked out of your first film with Salman Khan...
Those are all rumours. I’m very much a part of the film. There is no question of me dropping out after having heard the script and given my nod. Salman’s almost like family; I have no reason to go back on my word.

Since you are very particular about the script, what kind of role have you given your nod to?
The film’s as-yet-untitled and my role is not of a girl-next-door. It’s a character that I wanted to play and I’m pretty excited about the same. I’m not doing a period film but a human drama — a love story.

Now that you are prepared for filmdom, what happens to your career as a designer?
I have studied fashion designing, so I do plan to pursue it. But it has to wait now, till the time I’m settled as an actor. I’m young and exploring a lot of possibilities.

You’ve lost a lot of weight to enter films...
I’ve lost 30 kilos, but that’s not for this particular film. I do yoga regularly to keep fit.

Are you on your way to achieve size zero?
No way! I prefer to be on the healthier side, the quintessential Indian woman is voluptuous and not skinny. But that doesn’t mean I’m against those striving for size zero. To each her own.

Coming back to films, would you be comfortable getting under the skin of bold characters?
No bold roles for me, even if the script demands. I’m not comfortable and need to keep my family background in mind. Wearing skimpy and revealing clothes isn’t really me.

What’s your take on star kids being launched by their parents?
There are a lot of expectations from star kids and they have to live up to them. It’s also true that they get leverage to springboard into movies. But no one’s born to star parents by choice. If they have parents from the industry, what’s wrong in that?

With your brothers also trying their luck in the industry, is it all films that you discuss at home?
We always talk about films. It was more or less certain that I would join films. It was only a matter of time. The discussions we have at home are always entertaining. Even my mother chips in with her suggestions.

How often did you accompany your father, Shatrughan Sinha, on his campaign trail?
Unfortunately, we could not accompany him everywhere. But we did join him whenever we could.

Bikini fine if Dad Kamal not around

Shruti Haasan, Sarika and Kamal Haasan’s light-eyed, fiery-natured daughter, is a month away from breaking into Bollywood.
At 23, she is used to stardom of sorts having performed live with her own music band and sung for a number of films. But it’s Soham Shah’s Luck that she’s setting her hopes on.

Her romantic lead is Imran Khan, who Shruti has known since childhood. “He actually considers me his little sister, but that didn’t make it difficult for me to romance him on screen!” she laughed. But the film is not all romance. She’s done death-defying stunts “crossing all boundaries that might have ever existed while filming action scenes” and wounded herself too in the bargain. “But I’m proud of those bruises,” said Shruti.

She’s happy, however, that her superstar father didn’t drop on the sets. “I wouldn’t be able to act in front of him so I told him to stay away and watch the final product,” she smiled. Doing a bikini scene, too, would be difficult with Kamal around, she admitted. “I’m okay with wearing a bikini onscreen or showing a little skin. I don’t know why a great deal is made out of the bikini! All those who have worn it till date, have looked good, and if you have a great body — then why not,” she said, “but... my dad shouldn’t be in the same film!”

Her debut film apart, Shruti’s busy composing the music for her home production, a remake of A Wednesday in Telugu and Tamil with Kamal playing the lead. “You can imagine how nervous I am as both the films will release within a gap of a few days. I am keeping my fingers crossed. Composing music was a different experience altogether and it was challenging working with dad,” she said.

Govinda, Narmmadaa love books

Govinda's little girl has grown up and is ready to follow his footsteps and enter filmdom... she talks about Daddy dearest on.

Father's Day!

A quality that you have imbibed from your dad: Reading and the curiosity to learn new things in life. We both just love to read books from different fields.

A memory of a dad-daughter bonding that will remain fresh in your mind: I think that would be the schedule of his film 'Banda yeh bindaas hai'. Because on that trip I got a lot of time to know and understand my dad like a true professional. He shared so many valuable acting tips during the schedule. I can say, after this trip my dad also became my friend, philosopher and guide.

One special thing that you would love to do for him: The most special thing would be to write a poem for him.

Father’s day message: I feel like one of Gods’ favourite child being born as your daughter. You are the best dad in the world. I love you a lot!!

The film is directed by Soham Shah and is all set to hit the theaters on 24th of July.

"Sonam becomes Sahibaan"

After Delhi 6, ace Bollywood director Rakeysh Omprash Mehra has decided to rope in Sonam Kapoor for his upcoming flick.

Mehra’s forthcoming project will be an ambitious screen adaptation of legendary love story Mirza-Sahibaan'.

There have been many screen adaptations in Hindi as well as Punjabi of legendary romances including ‘Heer-Ranjha', ‘Laila-Majnu' and ‘Sohni-Mahiwal'.

Thus far, no prominent film has been produced on the love story of Mirza and Sahibaan.

According to reports, it was said that Sahibaan was extremely beautiful.

About her beauty, it was believed that when she (Sahibaan) went out with a lungi tied around her waist into the lanes of Punjab, the nine angels that guard the spheres, died on seeing her beauty.

‘Mirza-Sahibaan' will be the first costume drama that Anil Kapoor’s daughter would work in.

Who will play Mirza, Saahiban’s lover is still unknown but it is in reports that it might be played by Junior Bachchan.

Narmmadaa In Hero No 1’s footsteps

She may not have signed her first film as yet, but Narmmadaa Ahuja, daughter of popular actor (and sometime politician) Govinda, sure knows how to be in the limelight.

Photo: Narmmadaa Ahuja

The media already has her pegged as the latest glamour gal on the block. She’s already added a few extra alphabets to her name for luck.

Last year, she accompanied Salman Khan to an awards function — setting the rumour mills on fire. But ask Narmmadaa about it, and the young lady answers with typical Bollywood doublespeak — and a broad wink — “Ah, let me not comment on all that. I don’t want to begin another controversy!”

By all accounts, Narmmadaa loves all the hype, even though she’s appropriately bashful in her manner. “I hope I can match up to it [the expectations] and more. My parents are always there to guide me and the best part is that they give me the freedom to decide..”

And decide she has — she wants to be an actor. After all this is a girl who grew up watching her father on the sets, even bunking school on occasion. Even so, Narmmadaa insists it wasn’t a decision that she made lightly. “I took a little time to decide. But around the age of 17, I was certain I wanted to follow in daddy’s footsteps. And I’ll give it my best shot.”

Acting is, of course, not her only aspiration — 10 years down the line she wants to see herself “surrounded by beautiful children. All of them would also be known for their good nature.”

Though she attributes her acting genes to her father, she says she gets all the rest from her mother. “I closely resemble my mom; even my complexion is like hers. And you know what? My mom is a beautiful person from outside and more so from within.”

There is a lot of speculation about what films she signs but the girl is in no hurry. “I got back from London last month and that’s when the news about my debut broke out in the media. I know that because of my dad, interest levels are high. But I want to take a time to select the right projects.”

“Different makers have different styles and treatments for their films. I'd like to do one film with each. Bas itna sa khawab hai…” she says with practised ease.

Another Nigam takes the mike!

Photo: Neekita Nigam

Only 24, Neekita Nigam has worked with composers like Shankar Ehsaan and Loy, Anu Malik, MM Kreem and Sandeep Chowta.

She has also travelled around the world singing at concerts with her brother Sonu Nigam since she was 14. But it’s only now that Neekita thinks her time has come.

Though she has sung for south Indian films and also for a few Hindi ones like Pyare Mohan and Marigold, Neekita is hoping Anil Kapoor’s Shortcut, where she’s sung for Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, will help her make a splash. But she isn’t limiting herself to films and has already started work on her debut pop album, for which she’ll compose a few songs too.

“People say I could’ve started earlier, but I don’t think it’s late now. I’d rather be a self-made person like my father and brother. I wouldn’t want my brother going around recommending me. So I waited for my time to come,” says Neekita who holds a doctorate in hypnotherapy.

Although her father (Agam Kumar) and brother are her biggest influences, it was her elder sister Meenal who’s responsible for her singing career. As for her brother, “He is an amazing artist, but I don’t live under his shadow. I did whatever was offered, which were Telugu songs to start with.”

Does she want to turn actor? “Honestly yes, I’m a big movie buff. I’ve got offers but I’ll take it up when I get the right role.”

Shruti and Sonakshi: Young, Beautiful, and Talented

Shruti Haasan Speaks

Her film career’s going great guns with her debut film, Soham Shah’s Luck opposite Imraan Khan, ready for release. As for her music, she’s now in Los Angeles working on her first English album.

Shruti Haasan has her hands full in the most wonderful way, but she’s not letting any confusion creep into her two passions, films and music. “Both films and music are an integral part of me and I give each the space they deserve.”

The elder daughter of Sarika and Kamal Haasan, Shruti’s very proud of her parentage and upbringing. “I always had music around me, 24X7. My dad loved The Who and Beatles, my mom loved Floyd and Dylan. Dad was always so alive; he would be singing and entertaining us, or making us sing and dance. It was an electric and artistically charged atmosphere.”

Even so, Shruti says she never really knew what she wanted to be. “Chennai was an incredible rooted place to grow up in. I went to a lovely school (Lady Andal, Chennai) which really helped in developing a sense of self. I grew up with amazing friends and a lot of books.”

Books are another passion.” I love reading! I could talk for hours and hours about authors and books that have changed my life.” Kafka, whose “It’s often safer to be in chains than to be free” quote adorns her Myspace profile, is a special favourite.

But the life of a singing star was a huge attraction. “I remember putting on a CD and practising with a hair brush in front of a mirror in my bathroom and blowing kisses to invisible audiences. I began as a bathroom singer,” she says with a wink.

Shruti was just six when she sang her first song for Ilaiyaraaja, and made her Bollywood playback debut shortly thereafter singing with her father for Chachi 420 and then Hey Ram.

In the alternative music scene Shruti made her debut with her band The Extrementals at the Rolling Stone launch last year. But it’s not easy to survive in non-mainstream music, Shruti feels. “I’ve seen so many wonderful bands and it isn’t easy. I really respect their consistency and passion.”

Cut to the present, Shruti feels it's a great time to be part of Bollywood. “There are so many people making different choices, narrating unique stories and basically pushing their own buttons. It’s a very important time.”

Sonakshi Sinha Speaks

She wanted to be a biotechnologist or an astronaut, but her poor mathematics came in the way. In retrospect, actor-politician Shatrughan Sinha’s youngest child Sonakshi Sinha is happy she didn’t plan too hard.

“I like the way my life has shaped up minus the planning,” says this fashion design student who aspires to model her own creations on ramp. Well, that didn’t quite happen but Sonakshi did lose nearly 30 kilograms to make her ramp debut last year.

Sonakshi, who turned 22 this week, is clearly the kid of the family as she takes a break from this interview to answer her mother — “Haan mumma, I’ll take it na…” Turning back, she continues, “We’ve always been kept away from the industry and led a private, sheltered life. I have no friends from the industry. Mom made sure to keep us grounded.”

A student of fashion design at SNDT college, Mumbai, “modelling just happened” says Sonakshi. “I’m really enjoying it now but I won’t waste my education. I was student of the year at SNDT and I plan to launch my label after having made a name for myself. People will identify better with my label when they know of me otherwise.”

But that’s the long-term plan; for now, she’s looking at scripts for her Bollywood debut. “I don’t want run-of-the-mill stuff; my parents are taking care of that department. Once I get off ground I’m confident to make my mark. After all, I am my father's daughter!”

She would love to act opposite Hrithik Roshan and “all the Khans”, and has her pick of favourite directors too — “Anurag Kashyap and Ashutosh Gowarikar. I would like to do films with old world charm, something like Jodha Akbar and Parineeta.”
“Cinema has changed so much over the years, but you know now is a good time for new comers. The script is what matters, no big star names or big budgets, so I’m glad I’m here now.”

Being a star kid can be a huge plus, it can be a disadvantage too. “I don’t face any problems thanks to my parents. But I’m very clear —do my work and go back home. If you do make friends along the way, you are lucky.”

Sonakshi also knows her limits. “My parents are quite happy as long as I don’t cross limits…something like walking in a bikini is a strict no-no,” she gushes.

Doting mother Poonam chips in, “She has always been a creative kid. I remember how she used to sketch silhouettes and designs on paper as a kid and throw it away. I would go and pick them up. She took time to identify her creativity but I always knew it.”

“But of course it’s safe to say she has taken more after her father,” she adds.

Meet Beautiful Mehul Kumar's Daughter

Photo: Jahaan Bloch

Veteran producer and director Mehul Kumar is back after a long hiatus, with a sequel to his earlier hit film Krantiveer, titled Krantiveer The Revolution.

Asked why he waited for 15 years to make a sequel to Krantiveer (1994), Mehul replies, "Sequels didn't work in the Hindi film industry earlier, but in the last couple of years sequels have done well. So I decided to make one now".

Mehul will introduce his daughter Jahaan in Krantiveer The Revolution. "The sequel will not have any of the actors from the original film and will be a youthful film with a contemporary story. Jahaan plays Nana Patekar's daughter," the director adds

Krantiveer The Revolution has been inspired by a few real life events and deals with corruption, terrorism and violence. The presentation and screenplay have been treated in the same way as the earlier Krantiveer, insists Mehul.

Commenting on his daughter, Mehul says, "Jahaan has worked with a lot of actors and is quite familiar with the industry's workings. She knows everything about filmmaking. She has been trained thoroughly and has learned Urdu diction as well as martial arts."

Mehul Kumar reveals that he plans to cast Amitabh Bachchan and Nana Patekar in a film which will be launched in September 2009.

Photo: Rhea Kapoor

Rhea Kapoor daughter of Indian film actor Anil Kapoor has entered Bollywood and has turned as a film producer. Rhea Kapoor will assist papa Anil Kapoor with his home production starring her elder sister Sonam in a film titled ‘Ayesha’. The film ‘Ayesha’ is a remake of Jane Austen’s novel Emma.

Rhea Kapoor is a product of Dhirubhai Ambani International School and before this she was working as an assistant to director Ayaan Mukherji, for Karan Johar’s film Wake Up Sid.

Sonam Kapoor is doing a film and papa Anil Kapoor is making sure no stone is left unturned to make Ayesha a special film. In fact, sister Rhea too has stepped on board as the official producer of the film. And you bet Sonam is having a lot of fun working with her.

Sonam, who plays a chronic match-maker in Ayesha, will begin shooting for the film in the third week of June in Delhi. But before that, she will fly down to Los Angeles next month for dress rehearsals. Designer Mona May, who has done Amy Adams’s costumes for Enchanted, has been roped in to dress Sonam for Ayesha. So while Anil is looking after other stuff of their production house, the sisters will be in LA, trying the costumes.

Sonam says she’s having a great time with Rhea, spending hours together huddled over the creative aspects of the film and getting every detail right.

Narmmadaa: Welcome to Bollywood!

Photo: Narmmadaa Ahuja

Daughters of Bollywood stars seem to set the ball rolling. Sonam Kapoor, Anil Kapoor’s daughter has already made her debut and she is on the roll.
Next in the pipeline is Narmada Ahuja, Govinda’s daughter who has long desire to become an actress. Due to numerology, she changed her name to Narmmadaa.

When Narmmadaa interacted with the media she seemed to be very spunky and full of enthusiasm. She claimed that acting is in her genes. She also mentioned, “I was waiting for this moment for so long. I’ve always wanted to become an actress and finally it has arrived.”

With all the actors’ kids brandwagon getting into action in Bollywood why should Govinda’s daughter be left far behind? Well, Narmmadaa Ahuja has decided to take the plunge and papa Govinda has been generous enough to promise her that he will launch her. If you are still wondering why Narmmadaa is spelt so, it is all with the blessings of numerology. Many will remember that she had made many a heads turn when she appeared as Salman Khan’s arm candy at the 2008 IIFA awards. In fact, there was even gossip that she was the reason behind Salman’s and Katrina’s alledged fight.

According to sources, Govinda has announced that he will make a film where he will launch his daughter. There is also news that director David Dhawan and producer Vashu Bhagwani have been roped in to make the movie. Govinda’s fans will surely remember that this duo was instrumental in giving him hits like “Hero No. 1″ and “Coolie No. 1.” There was some rumor that Sanjay Leela Bansali, of “Black” and “Devdas” fame, was the first choice for the director, however, their plans did not materialize. All the eager readers will be wondering about the actor who has been asked to play the role of the male lead, well, it is none other than Shahid Kapoor of the “Jab We Met” fame.
Welcome, Girl!

JP Dutta Daughter interests on Film

Photo: Nidhi Dutta

After Umrao Jaan (2006), J P Dutta was working on his next; an action thriller with romantic undertones. The untitled film was to launch his daughter Nidhi Dutta. He is married to yesteryear beautiful actress, Bindiya Goswami.

But for now, the film has been put on the backburner.

The film, backed by Reliance BIG movies, has been affected by the recession and they don't consider the film commercially viable anymore.

A source in the industry reveals, "Dutta has been working hard on the film which he was planning to start sometime next year. This new film is said to be out of his comfort (war) zone. Reliance signed a contract with the maker despite the dismal performance of his last release and gave the director a free hand with the script and was even co-producing the venture jointly. All was going well for the maker till three weeks back when the global recession made its way to India, affecting every sector of the economy, including the film industry."

The source adds, "The maker was getting ready to leave for the recce of the film with his trusted assistants in the first week of November, when he received a letter from co-producers Reliance stating that due the financial crisis in the industry, the movie and all its proceedings have been halted for the time being and will only resume when the situation in the market corrects itself. A similar kind of letter has been sent by the corporate house to their under production films which have not yet mounted sets as of now."

While waiting for her debut, Nidhi still assist her papa as assitant director.

Sonam Kapoor and Imran Khan Ready for The Next

Photo: Sonam Kapoor & Imran Khan

New kids on the Bollywood block Imran Khan and Sonam Kapoor make a rather unique pair. The camaraderie they share was on display at an event in Mumbai where they admitted to working together in Dharma Productions' next.

Sonam Kapoor went all ga-ga over Imran Khan at the launch of a collector's edition of Filmfare. A fashion issue which has her and the actor on the cover page. And it looks like a warm up publicity for their forthcoming film.

"I think Imran is one of the most beautiful men that i have seen. He's gorgeous. We are doing Dharma Production's next. It's a romantic-comedy, it has a great script" said Sonam.

The actress seemed rather excited through the launch and barely gave Imran a chance to talk.

"I met her for the first time at the premier of Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na" said Imran when Sonam interrupted, "Can I tell the story please?".

Imran being the gentleman let Sonam do most of the talking, "Sonam would like to tell you the story. There is no conversation, there is more of a monologue, I am a very good listener," he said.

"That is not true. He just does not shut up," said Sonam, all in good old friendly banter.

However, when Imran had a chance to talk the actor decided not to answer.

"It's premature to say anyting about Luck," said Imran about his forthcoming film Luck.

However, Sonam spoke about the controversy surrounding Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and her over walking the red carpet at Cannes for an international make-up brand.

"Whatever was said was never meant as it was projected. It was a professional commitment for me to go Cannes and then not to go. It was all for my good. That's all I have to say about it," she said.

Sonakshi Sinha: Waiting for Debut!

Photo: Sonakshi Sinha
My career choice – just go with the flow!

Sonakshi graduated in fashion designing from SNDT College and had chosen fashion as a serious career option. But after she lost a staggering 30 kilos in the past year, she decided to try her hand at modeling, and even walked the ramp for noted fashion designers at the Lakme Fashion Week 2009. "Everything just happened, and I pretty much went with the flow.
Films happened to be an eventuality. After I lost all the weight, I began to model, and that's when I decided that the next step for me would be acting," she explains.

She made big news when she turned down Salman Khan as her co-star for her debut film. The news was such that Khan had expressed his desire to work with Sinha, but she turned him down, stating that newcomers who work with Salman are always overshadowed and sidelined.
To this, she says, “It was just blown out of proportion. I still am in talks with him, and nothing has been decided yet.”

My favourite genre and role

22-year-old Sonakshi's favourite film genre is very different from other actresses her age. She says, "I would love to work in a period film, something that hasn't been done before. I enjoyed watching Aishwarya Rai in Jodhaa Akbar and Vidya Balan in Parineeta and I would love to do something like that."

The role she would die for, she explains, "has been done before, but I would love to reprise the role of Paro in Devdas. The grandeur and aura surrounding the character is simply out of this world."

Sonakshi also knows where to draw the line and would not be comfortable playing a bold role. "I do have certain reservations, in the sense that I wouldn’t be able to wear or enact a certain role that I’m not comfortable with, and also, at the end of the day, I am answerable to my parents."

"Oh, the list would be endless. But yes, I would love to work with Ashutosh Gowariker and Karan Johar some day."

The actor she wants to work with is, "undoubtedly, Hrithik Roshan. He is the ultimate actor and needs no definition. Rani Mukerji, too, is one of my favourite actresses, and working with her would be a great experience," she says.

I’m a star kid, and it’s loaded with expectations!

Being a star kid, Sonakshi does agree that there are the perks, saying, "I wouldn't disagree that it makes things easier, but still, there are a lot more expectations attached. And if you don't live up to them, you are bound to find yourself in a soup. I know I will always be called Shatrughan Sinha's daughter and I am proud of that fact, and will strive to live up to the name and expectations."

Who are her major influences and inspirations? "My parents are my biggest inspiration and influence, and making them proud is my ultimate goal," she says.

Meanwhile, Sonakshi’s brothers, Luv and Kush, are all set to make their Hindi film debut. Kush, who will be seen in Apratim Khare’s next untitled film, is getting all geared up, while Luv has already finished shooting for Raj Kanwar’s Sadiyaan. Their little sister, who is overjoyed with her brother's endeavors, says, "As you know, Luv is already finished with his film and Kush is about to being shooting. I'm very happy for my brothers and wish them only the very best."

Good Luck!
